Management Plan of the “Arahuana"

Arahuana

The “arahuana” (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) is an ornamental fish that is in high demand for the aquarium market.  They reproduce in a unique way: the eggs are incubated in the mouth of the father. More than 100 fry hatch at a time, emerging from the father’s mouth. Old ways collecting the arahuana did not take their unique reproductive method into consideration, resulting in the waste of eggs and loss of reproducing fish.

The “arahuana” plan takes their reproductive method into consideration, by preserving 50% of the fry in order to contribute to the sustainability of the population of fish. The mature fry are caught and placed into plastic bags filled with water, and then the parents are returned to the water to reproduce again.
