Sustainable management requires that there be a well-considered plan for the management of plant and animal resources, based on a thorough technological and scientific understanding of those resources, the eco-systems they inhabit, and their environment. The proper management of these resources, based on such a plan, should result in the ability to satisfy the economic, social and cultural needs of human populations on an ongoing, long-term basis, without compromising the well-being of future users.
In accordance with the Amazon Fishermen’s Ordinance, the Law of Protected Natural Areas, and the Master Plan for the Pacaya Samiria Natural Reserve, commercial users of resources must present a management plan in order to obtain governmental permission to avail themselves of these resources. Consumers of these resources are directly responsible for the implementation of this plan. For these reasons, it is vital that local communities actively participate with the scientists and technicians involved in designing the plan. The management plan is a technical- administrative tool whose purpose is to stipulate policies for use, strategies, and methods to achieve sustainability.
In order to successfully execute such a plan, the local population works closely with scientists and technicians who are qualified to analyze and educate them regarding sustainable management practices. The successful execution of the plan will help to empower the communities involved to continue to manage their own resources, thereby creating a positive impact on the future of succeeding generations and their continued livelihood within the rainforest setting
