Cocha El Dorado (El Dorado lake) is located in the upper section of the Yanayacu Pucata basin in the PSNR. The area measures 462.9 hectares and has a perimeter of 3,0217.09 meters, and is located at the coordinates UTM 9 439 37976 North and 574 672 East. The surrounding jungle presents some evidence of disturbance due to the extraction of certain wood-bearing tree species. However, among the tree species that are commonly found are various types of Cecropia (Cecropia spp.), Clusia (Clusia spp.) and the “Punga” (Pseudobombax munguuba). Also found in this area are a vast amount of different fish species like the “paiche”(Arapaima gigas), the “arahuana” (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum), the “gamitana” (Colossoma macropomum), the tucunare (Chicla monoculus), the acarahuazu (Astronotus ocellatus) and many more. Amongst the reptile species the most frequently seen are the “black cayman”(Melanosuchus Niger), the “white cayman” (Caiman crocodylus) and the “taricaya turtle”(Podocnemis unifilis). The area is also home to a vast amount of bird species such as the green parrot (Amazona spp.), the “horned screamer” (Anhima cornuta), the “gray heron” (Ardea cocoi), the “great egret” (Cosmerodius albus). “the snowy egret” (Egreta thula), the “tiger heron” (Tigrisoma lineatum), the “Muscovy duck” (Cairina moschata), the “Alagoas Currassow” (Crax mitu), various parakeet species (Brotegeris spp.) and the “Neotropic Cormorant” (Phalacrocorax olivaceus) amongst others. And finally, the jungle houses mammals such as the “mono coto” (Aloutta seniculus), the “nutria” (Luntra longicaudis), the “giant otter” (Pteronura brasiliensis),the “grey dolphin” (Sotalia fluviatilis), and the “pink dolphin” (Inia geoffrensis), among others. .
