Achievements
Recovery of various fauna and flora species
- In 2004 the first Management Plan of the “paiche” in El Cocha El Dorado, Cuenca del Yanayacu Pucate and the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve was put into effect. The Yacu Tayta received authorization for fishing and commercial use of 10% of the total population of the “paiche”.
- The annual production of arahuana fry has increased: from 8,000 since the project began to 30-35,000 today.
- The communal eco-tourism projects allow both tourists and members of the local communities to engage in activities that promote the sustainability and management of precious resources
Sensitizing the population
Empowering fishermen to utilize national resources in a responsible way results in greater long-term commercial benefits. Community members had to be educated and made to understand that there were advantages to taking care of the available natural resources.
The management of natural resources by the Yacu Tayta is a model of development for the surrounding communities, who are also beginning to dedicate themselves to the protection and reproduction of various species. The local populations have truly begun to see the importance of taking care of the bio-diversity in the Amazon.
